David Romtvedt’s Introduction to Basque Cultural Day, 2021

Authors of The Tree of Gernika, Irujo and Romtvedt offer us a peek into the life of Bertsolari Joxe Mari Iparragirre, author of the unofficial Basque anthem Gernikako Arbola. For the first time, his poetry has been translated into English, offering us a glimpse of Euskal Herria in the mid-1800s through the eyes of a man who lived much of his life in exile.

Romtvedt, a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship in poetry, NEA trinational fellowship in music and poetry, the Pushcart Prize, and the Wyoming Governor’s Arts Award, Romtvedt served for seven years as poet laureate of Wyoming, translated the bertsos for this book.

With Xabier Irujo, Romtvedt will discuss Iparragirre and his life as seen through the eyes of his own work.
