INNER STRENGTH: PORTRAITS OF BASQUE WOMEN, A PRESENTATION
October 21, 2023
What began as an effort in 1997 by Begoña Pecharroman to document the stories of immigrant Basque women has evolved into a wonderful project that now spans nearly three decades of work. Environmental black and white photographs were taken by Peter Oberlindacher of many of the women interviewed by Begona, the Basque Museum & Cultural Center, the Basque Educational Organization, The Basques of Kern County and the Tales from the Past Project. Patty Miller, Project Coordinator, will highlight the stories of some of the women featured in the exhibit who came to the American West. Themes include those of work, political oppression, and life in their homeland as well as immigration and integration into society in their new home. The collective portraits and stories reveal the fortitude of the Basque women, who made the decision to live in the United States, sometimes amidst great adversity.
