A NOTE FROM OUR MOVIE CLUB LEADER
For the inaugural edition of the Movie Club, we’ll be watching Fermin Muguruza’s 2015 documentary NOLA?, in which the legendary Basque punk musician and filmmaker documents the history of New Orleans’s jazz culture and the impact of Hurricane Katrina. The film intersperses interviews with local musicians with live recordings of Muguruza’s music to draw parallels between the experiences of Basques and the African American community of Louisiana. The film is part of Muguruza’s Black is Beltza transmedia project, which seeks to reframe modern Basque history and identity through themes such as Blackness and the African American experience, music as a political act, global legacies of revolution and political resistance, and Basque exceptionalism. Keep an eye out for these concepts as you watch the film.
